Here’s a comprehensive overview of the main Australian visa pathways currently available (as of mid‑2025), covering work, study, family, innovation, and regional routes:

Work & Skilled Visas

  • Skills in Demand (SID) visa – Replacing the old TSS (482) from late 2024. Has three streams: Specialist, Core, and Essential. Minimum 1 year of experience. Can lead to PR after 2 years under ENS (186)
  • Skilled Independent (189) – Points-tested permanent visa (no sponsorship).
  • Skilled Nominated (190) – PR visa via state nomination.
  • Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) – Provisional regional visa, leads to PR.
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) 186 & Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) 187 – Employer‑sponsored PR routes.
  • Global Talent Visa (Subclass 858) – For highly skilled individuals in specific fields. Requires international recognition and endorsement.
  • Business Innovation and Investment (Subclass 188) – For business owners and investors. Requires significant investment or business turnover.

Temporary Work visas:

  • Subclass 400 – Short-term specialist work (up to 3 months).
  • Subclass 408 – Activity-based (e.g., cultural, research)
  • Subclass 482 – Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, replaced by Skills in Demand (SID) from late 2024.
  • Subclass 485 – Graduate Work visa for international students.

Innovation & Business

  • National Innovation Visa (858) – Launched December 2024, replacing Global Talent & Business Innovation visas. For exceptionally talented individuals, PR is granted on approval.
  • Business Innovation & Investment (188) – Still in place but being phased out; working investment/business categories, pathway to PR

Student & Guardian Visas

  • Student visa (Subclass 500) – For full-time study. Recent reforms enforce Genuine Student intent, higher English/financial requirements, and require a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) at application.
  • Student Guardian visa – For parents/guardians accompanying students under 18. Allows stay during the course, but no full-time work

Family & Humanitarian Visas

  • Partner & Child visas – Partner visa processing times are improving (~15 months), child visas remain uncapped.
  • Parent visas – Heavily backlogged (14–31 year wait), limited annual allocation (~8,500 spots)

Emerging / In Discussion

  • Digital Nomad Visa – Discussions ongoing, but not officially implemented. Temporary alternatives like Visitor (600), WHV (417/462)
